Details

“How did work shape female identity in the GDR? The official discourse celebrated the “fully integrated” woman in production, the equality enshrined in the constitution, and state-sponsored motherhood. Behind this idealized image of the socialist woman and the real progress made lay another reality: that of a double burden between factory and household, between promised emancipation and denied recognition.
The films in the program give a voice to those who experienced this contradiction. Through their gestures, their stories, and their sometimes disarming humor, a sensitive portrait emerges of a generation of women whose often invisible work nevertheless sustained an entire world.”
