Filmmaker Gerd Kroske started his career in the GDR, making doc films in the immediate runup to the Wende and reunification. He has been an alert observer and critic of social divisions and discrepancies reflected by the fates of those who suffer a marginalized life in the East and in the West. Discovering opposing effects, wit and beauty in these lives, his film is testimony to his fine, sharp eye on detail and decency. Kroske’s films always go against the grain.
