A white line across the colorful wall in West Berlin. An art project that would end in a momentous arrest in 1986. The story begins in the Weimar punk scene of the 1980s, where small anarchic pockets of freedom were defended against state normalcy: Turn the state into cucumber salad! More than thirty years later, it becomes clear that there was a leak. Suddenly, betrayal is in the air. The consequences continue to have a pernicious effect to this day. Friendships break apart in hindsight. The film tells of the tension between subculture and dictatorship. It is impossible to draw a line under the GDR.
Gerd Kroske’s documentary film about the pre- and post-history of the “Der Weiße Strich” (The White Line) campaign is a balancing act between reconstruction and confrontation. It tells of the tension between subculture and dictatorship.
