Between freedom and free fall

February 8. : DCP premiere: “LA VILLETTE”  (DDR 1990; 55 Min. 2K, with french ST)

Q& A with director Gerd Kroske

“How did the fall of communism in 1989/90 change art and literature in the GDR? How do artists look back on this turbulent time 35 years later?

The Franco-German conference examines the radical social and cultural upheaval of the fall of communism. It addresses the balancing act between newly won freedom and the challenges of capitalism: studio rents exploded and old networks collapsed.
Contributions from artists, historians and literary scholars shed light on how these transformations shaped the art world. The perspectives of French experts are particularly valuable, enriching the inner-German discourse with their own fresh, unbiased view.

An essential event for anyone interested in art, history and social debates”
